"Field of Dreams"

Woman to be high school's head football coach
-- A high school in Washington, D.C., is set to name a former women's professional football player as its head varsity football coach Friday, a move that a national women's sports advocacy group calls historic.

Natalie Randolph, 29, a science teacher at Coolidge High School, will be introduced as the school's head football coach at a news conference there Friday morning, according to her attorney, Lawrence Wilson.

Randolph, who was a wide receiver for the D.C. Divas women's pro football team and a standout sprinter and hurdler at the University of Virginia, has previous experience coaching boys, having been an assistant football coach for Washington's H.D. Woodson High School in 2006 and 2007.

"YES, YES, YES,..."

Every Urban Prep senior is college-bound

100 percent of first senior class at all male, all African-American Englewood academy is accepted to universities

The entire senior class of 107 students at Chicago's only public all-male, all-African-American high school has been accepted to four-year colleges.

The rigorous academic environment and strict uniform policy of black blazers, red ties and khakis isn't for everyone.  Only 4 percent of this year's senior class read at grade level as freshmen, said Tim King, the school's founder and CEO.

"There were those who told me that you can't defy the data," King said. "Black boys are killed. Black boys drop out of high school. Black boys go to jail. Black boys don't go to college. Black boys don't graduate from college.

This is outstanding and should serve as inspiration to many young men but also consider the following.  YES, they are breaking barriers.  YES, they should be excited and commended for their historic achievement.  And YES, just because they are admitted, doesn't mean they will enroll or even graduate.

Therefore I challenge this group of young men not only to enroll, but graduate from a four year higher education institution as well.

Two times a Charm: An Open Letter

Dear Society,

So which is worst, sexual assault or killing a dog? OK, so maybe that's not a perfect example but hopefully you get where I'm going with this. For a second time in almost two years, Big Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault. Although the woman played herself in the first case for the way she came out with it, he's still facing a lawsuit from her and while he probably will avoid charges in that case, he may have to fork up some money to make it go away. Then he goes out and (allegedly) does it again? If you ain't do nothing wrong, why go out get the same attorney as Ray Lewis and rapper TI, we all know they both did it (although Ray Ray got off with self-defense).

Nevertheless, Big Ben will probably get drunk and rub another female the wrong way before Mike Vick (possibly never) owns another dog. SMH!

Take that Society and all of your moral values that go along with it!

Yours Truly,

“Separate but Equal”

The Wake County School board fiasco has dominated education headlines across the state of North Carolina over the past few weeks. You can read the particulars here.  I myself have three quick points.

First, the individuals who are making the decisions which could impact hundreds of thousands of students and their families are missing the big picture. That picture is what’s best for the students and this idea of them continuously being in the best possible position to succeed academically.

Secondly, dividing communities will create apprehension and an entitlement to ownership. It will create an educational imbalance unless elected educational officials can guarantee every community and school an equivalent amount of resources as it relates to academic curriculum offerings, better than average teachers, and funding, among other things.  All of which on the tax payers' budget.

Finally, the uncertainty of how student admissions will be determined at magnet schools leaves too much open for interpretation. Politics come to mind! So does the” good ole boys” network. And status. And money, power, respect. Where is affirmative action when you need it?

With or without, the question is will it matter?  This could get more interesting.  Stay tuned!

Girl Gone Wild

Brittney Griner, the dunking freshman sensation for Baylor (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 14 AP), has been suspended for at least one game after throwing a punch that broke an opposing player's nose in a Big 12 game.

She's the most talked about female basketball player in a long time.  She can dunk off a drop step.  Her buzz started in high school.  ESPN did a story on her earlier in the college basketball season.  She was almost averaging a double double.  But now, she's in the news for the wrong reason.  All over a stupid foul (SMH)!

I agree with many of the sports writers in that there is no place in sports for such behavior.  That punch was vicious though.

"That's Just my Baby Daddy"

The groupies have taken it to another level!  A deranged Florida woman claiming to be Diddy's wife was busted for trespassing near his East Hampton home last week after asking locals where she could find the rap mogul's residence. Cemelia Green, 35, of Jack sonville, was arrested outside of a Bianca Road residence she mistook for Diddy's spread located less than a mile away on Hedges Banks Drive.

She told a confused maintenance worker there that she was married to the entertainer and owned the home. Police arrested her at the scene and charged her with trespassing and criminal mischief for breaking a sliding glass door at the residence.
East Hampton Town cops said Green, who remains in Suffolk County jail on $5,000 bail, has a history of mental illness and had driven to East Hampton from Florida in a rental car she had slept in for several days.

I was laughing on the inside when I was reading this.  What would be real funny is if this was really true...or even worse, Diddy was her baby daddy!  LOL!  Check out the throwback video of the day!

"He's Not Human"

Two things not featured in this video of the Knicks vs. Cavs from last night...

The cavs' bench reaction was PRICELESS after Delonte dunks on T-Mac.  I see why the rockets gave him away to the knicks.

Two, laughing my but off at buddy looking over the wrong shoulder.

You can watch both of them here or by clicking the title.  But first...

...here is the one thing that mattered the most about that game last night...when i saw this the first thing i said was "He's not Human."

If I was the NBA, I would go back and add two points to Lebron James overall point total, because he earned it after this dunk.
