"Mother to Son"

..."OUCH!"  I'm sure she probably said something else but still what a freak accident.  Wearing her son's jersey and all, Denard Span hit a hard foul ball that struck his own mother in the upper chest on Wednesday. She was treated by paramedics and back in the stands minutes later which was really good to hear.  To read full article, click the title.

What's the odds of that ever happening again?  Not likely.  However, it reminded me of another mother to son or shall I say son to mother confrontation that sort of flew under the radar two years ago. See that video below as well.

What is the world coming too?

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A Walmart store announcement ordering black people to leave brought chagrin and apologies Wednesday from leaders of the company, which has built a fragile trust among minority communities.

Wal-Mart officials are reviewing security tapes after an announcement was made for "all black people" to leave the southern New Jersey store. Shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, a male voice came over the public-address system at the Route 42 store in Washington Township and calmly announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now." Management later apologized.  Click the title to read full article.

OK I know, this has nothing to do with music, sports, or higher education, but it has everything to do with life and the way you treat people.  What is the world coming too?  I'm having a Michael Jackson moment right now...

Dunk You very Much - Part III

DUNK of the YEAR nominees

Ty Lawson vs. D. Wade vs. Lebron James vs. J.R. Smith and you can now add Corey Brewer...WHO?  Corey Brewer, use to play for Florida when they were winning NCAA Championships but like Rashad McCants a few years ago, and now Wayne Ellington, Kevin Love, Johnny Flynn and others, they go to Minnesota and fall off the face of the earth from an NBA standpoint.

Thanks C-Mo for sending this, this dunk may put Brewer back on the map...then again he is in Minnesota!

March Sadness, Bracketology, and the Winner Is...

I don't even know why I'm doing this to myself.  I'm not sure I'll be watching a lot of basketball but here is what I'm hoping doesn't happen...PUKE WINNING IT ALL, and I'm confident they won't  Therefore I had to fill out a bracket and here is what I have region by region for the bloggers and those of you who care!

East

Sleeper: Marquette, not really a sleeper, but with a 6th seed they may do a lot of damage.

Upset Special: #12 Cornell over #5 Temple.  They can play ball too!

Team to Beat:  Kentucky is the team to beat, too many weapons plus everyone's doing the john wall dance!  More links below.

Midwest

Sleeper:  N. Iowa/  They are 28-4 for a reason.  Tough draw for Kansas if they meet in 2nd rd.

Upset Special:  #13 Houston over #4 Maryland. Vasquez plays for the fans instead of his team. Houston is hot right now after going through the entire C-USA in their conference tournament.

Team to Beat:  Georgetown, Greg Monroe can do it all and the hoyas has what UNC lacked this year...SHOOTERS.

South

Sleeper:  Richmond will be a tough draw for Villanova.  I see them getting to the sweet 16

Upset Special:  I will be smiling when Louisville rips Duke apart in the 2nd rd.  #13 Siena over #4 Purdue

Team to Beat:  Baylor, the PG Carter has mad skills plus they have a shot blocker down low.  In and out game will be tough to stop, that is if Carter plays within himself.  He's short and he wears #45, you got to love that.

West

Sleeper:  UTEP, little short guard name Culpepper jacks em like Kobe, but he makes them.  If he plays unselfish, they could meet Syracuse in sweet 16.

Upset Special:  #11 Minnesota over #6 Xavier
Team to Beat:  This is probably the weakest bracket with two teams (florida and florida st) who shouldn't have made it with at large bids.  Syracuse is my pick.  The first team to whip UNC back in MSG earlier in the season.  Thanks, thanks a lot.

Final Four:  I have Syracuse and Georgetown playing for the 4th time this year with Syracuse winning and Kentucky versus Baylor (how ironic), who thought they had the inside track of getting John Wall after they hired one of his family members or close associates.  Pay back will not be in order.

Winner:  Kentucky over Syracuse and off go Cousins and J. Wall to the NBA doing that love to hate muscle flex dance.  Some people just don't know when to stop.  Please click on all links and enjoy.

And these are my picks, who do you have?

"Not worth the Money"

New England Patriots defensive end Ty Warren is forgoing his $250,000 offseason workout bonus, he says, because no amount of money is worth having his kids see their father without a college degree.

A possible NFL lockout in 2011, which has him thinking more about life after his playing career, also is on his mind.
That's why as the Patriots opened their voluntary offseason program Monday, the 29-year-old Warren was home in Bryan, Texas, with his wife Kesha and their three kids, Brionna, Brielle and Bailey.  To read full article, click title.

Some people would sit back especially in the current economy and say that he can afford to forgo that kind of money so he can go back to school and get his degree because he has already made millions. And I would say you are exactly right! But that’s not the point. In 2004, it was reported that 54 percent of NFL players had not earned a college degree. The national average graduation rate is 55 percent for Division 1-A football players according to the federal government.

For once it’s duly noted (I’m sure there are others) that a man of his status is stepping up and setting an example. He stressed taking his kids to school and being part of their education. More importantly, he talked about going back and finishing what he started in earning his college degree so his kids can see him walk across the stage. According to Warren, “I can sacrifice that bonus for that.” In the words of IJM, “I hear that, brother!”

I think other athletes need to take notice. Some throw away money for all the wrong reasons and here you have Ty Warren forgoing it for all the right ones.

On another note, I personally think the New England Patriots should donate Ty Warren’s bonus to help launch the iTooDream Foundation which is dedicated to fostering the lives of young men with aspirations of achieving higher education…wishful thinking, right?

"Field of Dreams"

Woman to be high school's head football coach
-- A high school in Washington, D.C., is set to name a former women's professional football player as its head varsity football coach Friday, a move that a national women's sports advocacy group calls historic.

Natalie Randolph, 29, a science teacher at Coolidge High School, will be introduced as the school's head football coach at a news conference there Friday morning, according to her attorney, Lawrence Wilson.

Randolph, who was a wide receiver for the D.C. Divas women's pro football team and a standout sprinter and hurdler at the University of Virginia, has previous experience coaching boys, having been an assistant football coach for Washington's H.D. Woodson High School in 2006 and 2007.

"YES, YES, YES,..."

Every Urban Prep senior is college-bound

100 percent of first senior class at all male, all African-American Englewood academy is accepted to universities

The entire senior class of 107 students at Chicago's only public all-male, all-African-American high school has been accepted to four-year colleges.

The rigorous academic environment and strict uniform policy of black blazers, red ties and khakis isn't for everyone.  Only 4 percent of this year's senior class read at grade level as freshmen, said Tim King, the school's founder and CEO.

"There were those who told me that you can't defy the data," King said. "Black boys are killed. Black boys drop out of high school. Black boys go to jail. Black boys don't go to college. Black boys don't graduate from college.

This is outstanding and should serve as inspiration to many young men but also consider the following.  YES, they are breaking barriers.  YES, they should be excited and commended for their historic achievement.  And YES, just because they are admitted, doesn't mean they will enroll or even graduate.

Therefore I challenge this group of young men not only to enroll, but graduate from a four year higher education institution as well.

Two times a Charm: An Open Letter

Dear Society,

So which is worst, sexual assault or killing a dog? OK, so maybe that's not a perfect example but hopefully you get where I'm going with this. For a second time in almost two years, Big Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault. Although the woman played herself in the first case for the way she came out with it, he's still facing a lawsuit from her and while he probably will avoid charges in that case, he may have to fork up some money to make it go away. Then he goes out and (allegedly) does it again? If you ain't do nothing wrong, why go out get the same attorney as Ray Lewis and rapper TI, we all know they both did it (although Ray Ray got off with self-defense).

Nevertheless, Big Ben will probably get drunk and rub another female the wrong way before Mike Vick (possibly never) owns another dog. SMH!

Take that Society and all of your moral values that go along with it!

Yours Truly,
