Black or White

The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.

So much to say, so I will keep it sweet and simple. This idea of starting an all white basketball leagues touches on so much more than sports. As I was reading the comments left by article readers, it reminded me of a question that has always been in the back of my mind, but you never want to publicly admit it because your personal everyday life is not impacted by it: DOES RACISM DOES STILL EXIST?

I’m not upset at the fact that the commissioner of this new league wants to start an all white league. It’s his time and money and he can do what he wants. That doesn’t mean me or you have to support it. However I am bothered by his reasoning for wanting to start the league. He said he “wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of “street-ball” played by people of color.”

The last time I checked, Tha Professor from the And-One mix-tape circuit is WHITE. One of the most fundamentally sounded basketball players of this generation is former Davidson standout Stephon Curry, now of the Golden State Warriors, who is BLACK. Kids (black and white) growing up today are idolizing the likes of Kobe Bryant and Lebron James just like Chris Paul grew up idolizing Magic Johnson and John Stockton. They are not looking at the color of their skin; they are looking at the way they play the game!

Secondly, he says “the white game of basketball, which is essentially a fundamental game, works." My response is so does street ball, just ask Rafer Alston, who started out as a street ball player before landing at Fresno State and then the NBA. And since when did the game basketball become associated with race or color? The perpetuation of such foolishness makes no sense. In all honesty, he sounds like a bitter dad whose son got cut from the high school basketball team.

  1. No one is going to watch that boring league! Not only is he a bitter dad, but he's probably a bitter dude who was posterized on a regular basis by some black dude when he used to hoop. In my opinion, the most exciting point guard that I've watched is Pistol Pete, white guy, and he is in my opinion the best point guard to lace them up after Magic of course. The logo of the NBA is a white guy, Jerry West.

There are numerous teams in the NBA that play fundamental basketball: Utah pick and roll, Jackson's triangle offense, Miller's old back screen ran offense which is now seen by Coach Rivers for Ray Allen.

This dude is a clown and I can't lie and say that I wish him well. This is like creating a hospital for people who ALMOST finished med school and letting them be doctors cause the other students were much better that are real doctors now. Would you go to that hospital then? Hell to the naw.

    Mr. Commissioner ... NECK YOURSELF!!!
