Texas lawmaker gives scholarship to family members
The Story: (CNN) – A veteran House representative from Texas said she made a mistake when she awarded charitable scholarships to her family members instead of students in her district.
Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, has been under fire recently, accused of breaking rules in giving the scholarships to relatives. "I've acknowledged that I was negligent. I've acknowledged that I made a mistake," Johnson said during an interview on CNN's "AC 360".
Johnson is accused of awarding scholarship money to her grandsons, David and Kirk Johnson, as well as the children of her Dallas district director, Rod Givens, last year. Each of the relatives were awarded two scholarships in the past year.
The Dallas Morning News newspaper reported that Johnson has awarded more than $25,000 in scholarships to two grandsons, two great-nephews and Givens' children in the past five years.
Johnson said her grandchildren were not instructed to lie on scholarship forms and indicate on the forms that they were not related to Johnson.
The Analysis: "Johnson said she was not aware of all the rules and said she was too busy with other activities to scrutinize the applications." Impossible being you at one time was a governing lawmaker. That's why you have personal and executive assistants. She also says that she has repaid all of the money. If her pockets are so deep, why didn't she just give that money to those students out her pocket from the beginning.
When it comes to scholarship monies, it should always be about the academic achievement and success of the student, especially at a time where college tuition is at a steady increase and because of the myth in many underrepresented communities that because you can't afford to pay for college, you can't attend.
Although what she did was unfair and unjustified, I wouldn't doubt that private scholarship organizations have been practicing this for years. It's all about your network. And sometimes that can work against you. Just ask Rep. Johnson.

Fantasy Football
This past weekend, the NFL seemed like fantasy football. I would have never guessed Vick would be the man this early in the season and that the Saints kicker would be chip shots and loosing games. And my Fantasy Football team is not doing so well...UGH!

Where is Peta now...? How many lives does this guy has? Two years in jail, lost everything financially, and almost pulled a TI and got himself in trouble again over the summer at his own birthday party. Now he's the man in the city of brotherly love. I'm happy that Vick is doing his thing, he's looking like a pro bowler! I'm mad (like everyone else in my fantasy football league) that I was slow in picking him up (shout out to Roc). The Little Giants - College Football Games of the Week
You would think that Notre Dame's coach Brian Kelly would have had a heart attack after that play, but instead he just stood there, just as shock as I was watching the end of this game. However it was Michigan State's head coach Mark Dantonio who remained cool, calm, and collective as he talked to the reporter (probably in shocked) about how he had a feeling that the play he named "Little Giants" would work...and it did. Then he promptly had a mild heart attack hours later. He's expected to make a full recovery! Although it would not have been a bad way to go out!

North Carolina at Rutgers
Two years ago we went to Rutgers and put up a 40 spot, winning by 32 points. We also had Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate. Gone are the days where I defense can win games (see BC game last year on the road), I'm hoping this is the game where the offense can play for four quarters, we need a win and we can get it against a Rutgers team who struggled to beat Florida International and Norfolk St...UNC 21-10
No. 1 Alabama at No. 10 Arkansas
This will probably be the best game all weekend. Let's see Ingram put up a 100 yards in the first quarter against Arkansas. If you haven't heard of Ryan Mallet, you will by the weekend. He's the best quarterback in the SEC and has been trying to get on the big stage again after being the #1 HS quarterback a few years ago. Arkansas is hot right now so I'm jumping on the bandwagon...Razorbacks 30-24

I never thought I'd be in a position to root against my favorite college football team. LSU has surprised me with an ok team, winning two SEC games so far with an OK offense. WVU should challenge them but they will be Baton Rouge where it's tough to get a win. I wonder if that Peterson kid has returned any more punts for TD's or did he get all of them out of his system vs. UNC. LSU 24-20

What will Boise State have to do to get into the BCS National Championship game? Go undefeated again which they might just do. Their left handed quarterback does not look that athletic to me but he's a very accurate thrower and BSU puts up points. What's in that blue grass in Idaho? Whatever it is, it's working. Bishop Long Accused of Sexual Coercion
The Story: (CNN) -- Two Georgia men have filed a lawsuit claiming that prominent Atlanta, Georgia, pastor Eddie Long coerced them into sex. The suits, filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Georgia, allege that Long used his position as a spiritual authority and bishop to coerce young male members and employees of his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church into sex.
"Defendant Long has a pattern and practice of singling out a select group of young male church members and using his authority as Bishop over them to ultimately bring them to a point of engaging in a sexual relationship," the suits allege.
Long is considered one of the nation's top black preachers. His church has more 25,000 members

The Analysis: Blog disclaimer: Innocent until proven guilty...Mike Jackson, R. Kelly, just to name a few beat such cases although all are different in their own way. However, very disturbing to say the least and really unfortunate. Classic case of the young men upping the price of the payoff and Mr. Long deciding not to pay (i don't know, just sounds like it). Nevertheless, with the paid trips and lavish hotels etc, this one will be a tough one to win in favor of the bishop. I would imagine that court documents will be sealed soon (prevents both parties from discussing it) and an agreement will be reached, however it does put a stain on not only Bishop Long, but his church as well. I will reserve all other thoughts/comments for a more appropriate setting.

There is a partnership between the high school and Oberlin College. Students who live within the district and attend Oberlin High School for their entire high school career may attend Oberlin College tuition-free, if accepted. What it amounts to is close to 48 million dollars.

Catch Him if You Can - College Football Games of the Week
Michigan QB Denard Robinson has been a Man among Boys and
is running all over the competition, making a good UCONN (shout to JH) team last year look like my high school JV team and an improved and over hyped Notre Dame (JG) team look average as they should be.
He's averaging 227 yards a game rushing and close to 3 touchdown games. If Robinson doesn't get hurt, he could be a heisman candidate at the end of the year. Last week I missed out on a number of good games, this week it's all about improving the record.
Overall 0-2 (UNC and Va Tech from 1st week)
Georgia Tech vs. UNC
UNC played well enough to beat LSU with so many unproven players. They are unproven no more. If Yates can stay consistent and with the addition of another running back being cleared UNC has another chance if they can figure out Ga Tech's option attack early. Like my homie Juvie said, I'm looking for UNC to "bounce back" in a big way...UNC 28-20
Wake Forest at No.19 Stanford
It's the battle of the private schools. We haven't heard from WF since Aaron Curry (crib) left while Stanford is quietly trying to become a contender. They had a nice win last week vs. UCLA and it would be nice to be 3-0 heading into a game vs. Notre Dame. Cards are at home so they have the edge...Stanford 42-21
No. 10 Florida at Tennessee
Rocky Top TN looked like floppy top last week vs. Oregon in Knoxville. It hurt my heart to see that score. Florida will pose an even bigger challenge. Scandal has hurt both my alma maters (UNC & UT), but the Vols are hurting the most. I want to go with the upset so bad, but Florida is rolling and UT's offense is struggling, UF 24-10
No. 9 Iowa at No. 24 Arizona
The only game of the week with two top 25 teams squaring off. In college sports, the advantage always goes to the home team in most cases (except in cases when Duke plays Alabama in Durham). Arizona is trying to remain consistent while Iowa is trying to hold down the Big Ten and keep up with Ohio State, too bad this game is not in Iowa, Zona in the upset...27-17

It's the Annual Down East Football Classic being held in Rocky Mount. Two of the best teams in the CIAA, but edge goes to ECSU, they've built up quite the athletic program...all they do is win championships, in the CIAA that is... ECSU 35-31

Bush Forfeits Heisman
The Story (ESPN): Running back Reggie Bush has decided to hand over the Heisman. Under pressure since his award winning 2005 campaign at USC was vacated, Bush said in a statement on Tuesday that he will forfeit the Heisman Trophy.
"One of the greatest honors of my life was winning the Heisman Trophy in 2005," the statement released by the New Orleans Saints reads. "For me, it was a dream come true. But I know that the Heisman is not mine alone. Far from it. I know that my victory was made possible by the discipline and hard work of my teammates, the steady guidance of my coaches, the inspiration of the fans, and the unconditional love of my family and friends."
The Analysis: Some gifts do last forever (this is a great article). I honestly think he did right because the Heisman Trust was going to take it anyway. Bush and his family did something that has plagued college athletics for some time now. He took money which he would have easily paid back if allowed and none of this would be an issue. He did not use performing enhancing drugs or abuse recreation drugs (The U, 30 for 30), he didn't rob anyone (Maurice Clarett), he didn't stalk anyone (UF Wideout), he didn't sell his game worn jersey (UGA WR). He did not physically cheat the game of college football.
And get this, Vince Young had the nerve to say he would gladly accept the Heisman since Bush gave it back. Seriously! That's almost like dating your best friend's ex-girlfriend. He got out voted by Bush by over 600 votes. It wasn't even close. C'mon Vince Young, be a man! Why take something you didn't earn!

The College Dropout
"Area colleges offer GPA-forgiveness programs to lure back dropouts"
The Story: Camden County College is one of many two- and four-year schools in the region welcoming dropouts back to campus. Others are reaching out to students who either left two or three years ago or were dismissed because of failing grades, including Community College of Philadelphia, Bucks County Community College, Rutgers University, and Rowan University.
The amnesty policies are enjoying new attention amid a national push to persuade former students to come back to complete degrees. Students who dropped out at least two years ago may resume classes without the worry that their poor past performance will blemish their degrees. Students who had "difficulty adapting to college" due to excessive partying or some other problem when they were 18 may have matured and may be ready to succeed, Jim Newell said.
President Obama's American Graduation Initiative aims to boost higher-education attendance and graduation rates, while Mayor Nutter is supporting an initiative focused on bringing back students who were halfway or more toward obtaining their degree when they left.
The Analysis: More schools should do the same. I'm shocked at the number of students who fail to finish college, especially those who are so close to finishing. Let's throw out the obvious reasons (pregnancy, family circumstances, money, employment), I wonder how many folks choose not to return because of embarrassment or perception? Some 18/19 year old students are not ready for college initially and that's ok, but I think the older one gets, the more mature and focus they become. Furthermore, plenty of individuals who do not have stellar undergraduate careers, are being admitted and or earning degrees from graduate school. I don't think my philosophy will ever change: it doesn't matter how long it take you to finish, as long as you graduate. Look at Troy Aikman, former Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame QB, it only took him 21 years to graduate from UCLA.
Kanye West was so inspired he entitled one of his earlier CD's The College Dropout. So many favorite records off this CD, but I'm going to go with "Spaceship." I redid that "Through the Wire" track back in my rhyming days.

"See it Through" - College Football Games of the Week
...And we (UNC Football) will do just that. College football is back in a big way although many UNC fans including myself would have preferred being in the news for reasons other than academic improprieties or agent funny business. One of my favorite poems says that "when you're up against a trouble, meet it squarely face to face..." and I applaud Butch Davis and Chancellor Holden Thorpe for doing just that.

I've been waiting for this game for over a year now. I'm a bayou (bengal) boy at heart with deep Louisiana ties, but I bleed Carolina blue. Like the purple and gold (ROO!) for a number of reasons, but I'm tarheel bred. With suspensions looming, I still expect this game to live up to the hype. I'm not sure if I agree with ESPN who indicated that UNC needs its best players to beat LSU...it may be just the other way around. I'll be there in person to see it for myself...UNC 23-21

Julious Javone Threatts is 21 years old. He's now behind bars without bail after Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said he used the alias Chad Jordan to pose as a 14-year-old boy, join the Tampa Bay Youth Football League and try to register at a Tampa middle school.
"Chad Jordan" might have gotten away with just playing football, but last week he tried to take his middle school imitation act to an actual middle school. Threatts attempted to enroll in Webb Middle School in Hillsborough (Fla.) last Tuesday, but his application was delayed because he lacked the proper paperwork proving his identity. When he was eventually moved to the school social worker's office -- Threatts told school officials he was homeless, so he was waiting with the social worker for the Department of Child and Families to arrive at the school -- his cell phone rang with a call from his mother, wondering where he was. School officials answered and learned Threatts' true identity from his mother, after which the 21-year-old was arrested for trespassing at the school.
The Analysis: Sometimes you got to just let it go. Find an adult league. Find some friends. IDK. First the dude from Florida gets caught playing AAU ball by his former coach and now this guy. This dude just might be more off than 50 Tyson and I mean that in a really nice way. He's putting youth at risk. If you read deeper into the story, everything about him from the way he talked, acted, and so on was very child like which is why he was able to mislead an entire city's parks and recreation department. To make matters worst, this guy tries to enroll in a middle school at 21years of age with young boys and girls, now that's SCARY!

Julious Javone Threatts is 21 years old. He's now behind bars without bail after Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said he used the alias Chad Jordan to pose as a 14-year-old boy, join the Tampa Bay Youth Football League and try to register at a Tampa middle school.
