"Imma Flirt" - Part II

Mary J Blige's husband took a punch to his face after Blige thought he was flirting with a waitress at her record release party on Tuesday, the NYPost reported.

"She turned to him and was screaming, 'You're not going to ruin my night,'" according to the report citing a witness.

Blige's husband, Kendu Isaacs, was then escorted out of the club following the incident and Blige left soon afterwards.

Buddy has some explaining to do.  Maybe he meant to give her a $10 bill instead of a $100.  Let's not forget yall, Mary was a one time D-boy back in her Jodeci days.

"Trapped in the Closet"

Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach has been fired over allegations from prominent ex football star and ESPN analyst Craig James.  Supposedly, Leach subjected his son to humiliating isolation on two occasions because of his injury. Disputes then ensued over the details and the motivation behind said allegations -- ex-players rushed to the coach's defense; James and his father were apparently bitter over his lack of playing time; the purported "electrical closet" turned out to be the size of a garage; a doctor swore Leach inflicted no harm --

As for the helicoptor dad Craig James, it's hard to imagine his own career will remain unscathed. While it's hard to criticize a father for looking out for his son, he's put himself in a very uncomfortable situation. An ESPN analyst -- a purportedly objective college football commentator -- just got a prominent college football coach fired. Will viewers take him seriously now when he critiques a coach's judgment? Will coaches of the games he's covering even speak with him? ESPN won't fire James for being a concerned parent, but it could certainly relegate him to Tuesday night MAC games for the foreseeable future.

I guess it's true.  Some people do have that much power.  Just think though!  All Leach had to do was keep his job until Dec. 31st and he would have received a  $800,000 bonus.  This story has more twist, turns, and allegations than R. Kelly trapped in the closet series.  Why nobody told me R. Kelly made 22 parts to Trapped in the Closet.  ME----->SMH!

"Breaking Barriers"

DETROIT -- Sarah Thomas made history at the Little Caesars Bowl on Saturday, becoming the first woman to officiate a bowl game when she worked the matchup between Ohio and Marshall.

Sarah Thomas worked as a line judge in the Little Caesar Bowl.

Thomas is one of five women officiating in major college football, but Little Caesars Bowl spokesman Tim Moore said she was the first to draw an assignment for a Bowl Subdivision postseason game.

Good for her!  Big ups to all my sports officials.

"Girl you gon think I Invented..."

Nearly 1 in 3 older teens gets ‘sexting’ messages

...SEXTING!  No, "not I," said the dog!  What happen to the days of passing a note with the boxes...do you like me?  Check YES, NO, MAYBE.  Gone are the days of "Hide and Go Get It," one of my favorite neighborhood games (shout out to East 22nd St.).

The new thing is texting, which is cool although a little impersonable.  But the new generation had to take it a step further with SEXTING.  In fact, a study says that 6 percent of those as young as 12 have received a racy text.  Thirty percent of 17-year-olds who have cell phones say they have received "sexting" photos or video messages, according to a new report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Eight percent of 17-year-olds say they have sent such sexually suggestive images. Among teens ages 12 to 17 years old, 15 percent say they have received nude or nearly nude images of someone they know via text messaging on their cell phones, while 4 percent say they have sent such photos. Among 12- and 13-year olds, 6 percent say they have received "sext messages."

Thus far, sexting has sparked national debates because of legal, emotional, and moral issues after a 13 year old Florida girl committed suicide after she used a cell phone to send  a topless photo of herself to a boy she liked who then shared it with those at schools and a neaby high school.

Electronic devices such as cell phones, ipods, mp3's and host of others should not exist on a middle or high school campus.  You shouldn't have to call your 8 year old on a cell phone to say where are you?  Here is a perfect reason why cell phones should be illegal on a high school campus until the final bell rings.  See 8 second video below!  You tube should be wrong for allowing video's like this other one to be posted as well.  Reach one, teach one...we have to start now.

"Beautiful Bliss"

The former is only skin deep. Any definition or search engine may tell you that it’s having qualities that delight the senses, especially the sense of sight. In my opinion, it also delights sin, tactful relationships, and friendships. You can be the prettiest thing on the outside but if you don’t have a heart of gold, than your “woman or man’s worth” is worth nothing.

The latter is a state of extreme happiness. Joy and peacefulness. You know most people never find it. Some are only able to get a glimpse before it’s taken or given away never to return. Others don’t care for it or at least pretend on the outside they don’t. But they do!

Together it’s Beautiful Bliss.

A few of my blog followers always ask me, what do you really think? Beautiful bliss to me is religion, family, school, work. I pray for safety and the health of my family, friends, and those who breathe the same air as me. I’m able to do the work that I do because of the education that I received and the knowledge that continues to be impressed upon on me.

Beautiful bliss to me is also music. It doesn’t matter to me matter who sings or raps the song because the most important thing is how the rhythm, and not the lyrics, make me feel. It’s not about the dance that accompanies the song; it’s about the person dancing.

Beautiful bliss is life. And each moment we spend judging others or yearning for what we don’t have (and what they do have), it takes away from their happiness. What about your happiness you ask? Well, you may have to intrinsically find it in someone else’s to realize and appreciate yours.

One for the basement (sing it with me)….“You know it gets no better than this, it’s like sunshine on a rainy day it’s like a high could you take me away…take me away, away…it’s a beautiful day…”

"Up in Smoke"

So this is how you get 1 million YouTube hits...

When is a bet not a bet?  A week ago while the New Orleans Saints were on the verge of loosing to the Redskins, a fan decided to Facebook (FB) his friends saying if the Saints came back to win, they could all come over and shoot up his 60 inch flat screen TV...not only did they shoot up his TV, but they set the YouTube world on fire when he posted the actual video.  Buddy actually predicted that he was going to get a 1 million YouTube hits, I'm just not sure this was the smartest way to go about it!  Let's not even talk about all of the laws being broken in this video.  I can only imagine what would happen if the SAINTS actually win the Super Bowl.

I know, nothing to do with nothing...roo!

"Sex Education

MIDWOOD, N.Y. (WPIX) - Two female teachers in Brooklyn have been reassigned after they were reportedly found naked inside a school classroom last month, PIX News has learned.

A 33 year old French teacher and a 29year old 29 married Spanish teacher, were busted by a school janitor who caught the "undressed" instructors allegedly sharing a kiss in the empty classroom at James Madison High School during a Nov. 20 assembly.  (Read More)

Does anyone else have a problem with the way the media reported this story (see video)?  Almost as if it was a celebration (kids in the background and such).  I'm thinking they could have attempted to put a positive spend on this situation?  Maybe, maybe not!

There is no doubt in my mind that these two teachers are smart.  But somethings are better off done in a private setting.  So if this is going on in the high schools, I do not want to think what the students are doing.

"Money to Blow"

He's at it again...

Chad Ochocino got fined for rocking a decorative poncho and sombrero in the bench area. This latest fine will cost him $30,000. He had to pay $20,000 for playfully bribing the refs a month ago.

At what point do you say, I'm not bigger then the team and I'd rather spend $50k on something way more important.

As the chorus to the song suggest, maybe "they (NFLers) can't help it" and since they got the money to give away, who are we to blame them...right? I'm not so sure.

While the NoFunLeague needs to relax a little, I hope some of that money goes to charity and not in the  NFL's pocket.

SN:  I'm hoping he scores 3 TD's against the Vikings for two reasons, as long as it helps them win so the SAINTS can earn home field and two, because this week I'm not playing the Wreckin Rams (shout out to Willie).

"A Note"

Not all blogs are meant to be negative (funny – YES!). Some are simply here to shed light on news. Respect the positivity…no need to slam Shaq while he’s doing a good thing therefore comments have been deleted.

While we may all be shocked, nobody’s judging Tiger Woods and if you are, that’s your business. Nevertheless, a good brother of mine and more importantly, a good friend and writer has written a note and asked me to share. A note that I will close out this Tiger Woods drama as it relates to this blog and hopefully put this entire ordeal into some sort of prospective.

-Russell Dula

A good friend opined this morning, "I didnt know Tiger Woods invented infidelity." No, the man everyone now loves to hate didnt. But he didnt just cheat, Tiger supplanted a sport that people that look like him were never supposed to master, he became the most endorsed and the richest athlete in the world, he married a Nordic blond woman that women envy like Jimmy Choo shoes, he bests the English language with a smile that belongs on a billboard, he triumphs, he overcomes, he surpasses, he amazes, he inspires, he........wins....a lot!

So what brings us to this place of misery when it concerns him? No, I dont mean misery like the pain of a stab wound on Desperate Housewives, or the misery of seeing a ref blow a call against the Carolina Basketball team, or the misery of a made-up chart that dogs Obama's Cabinets private sector experience. It's much worse. It's like the misery of seeing your child's best friend get into Harvard while he gets kicked out of Durham Tech. It's like the misery on the faces of the old men that meet everyday at P-Bobs when the election results came in last November. It's like learning that your hero, a man that you want to see on Mt Rushmore....cheated on his wife too. Chris Rock once said that, "men are as faithful as their options." So let's take a look down cheating memory lane and the options bestowed upon the famous and see how you feel about Tiger at the end.

Henry VIII: Not only did ol Henry cheat the pope out of an entire church, but he cheated on almost every wife...click here to read rest of the note

Scholarship and Perseverance: “Studying for a College Degree in a Homeless Shelter”

Neither wanted a picture in the paper. Few of their friends know they are homeless, and not all of their professors know. But they agreed to tell their stories… (read full story)

Petula Dvorak, a Metro columnist for The Washington Post, profiles two students who are striving for their college degrees while homeless. Both come from broken homes and lost jobs because of the tough economic times. But both consider a college education a way out of their situation. Meanwhile, though, they struggle to study amid the bedlam and petty theft of a homeless shelter, and worry about issues unknown to most college students, such as scheduling classes.

This is a story of inspiration at its finest. These two students should be commended as they continue to push on even after one gets his lap-top stolen right before midterms by someone at the shelter or and the other finding out that she’s pregnant. I pray and hope they see it through to the end. I think it’s great that these two students recognize their own potential, something that so many young people fail to do.

"DJ Turn me Up, Crank it to the max..."

"One for the Basement"

From what I understand, this song titled "All the Way Turnt Up" has been ripping through the  "deep south" for a minute.  Now everyone has a remix to it from Lupe to Ludacris to Soulja Boy.  To be perfectly honest, you may get confused when you try to determine who's the real owner of the song, at least I did.  You decide which version you like best by clicking here...

"Double Bogey"

So we learn that another Entertainer/Athlete is HUMAN! What's the big deal? Read Here.

Should the 1st athlete EVER to earn over a billion dollars be subjected to so much scrutiny?

I'm just not sure! I would love to say that this is going to blow over in a week or two, or maybe even a month, but it's not looking good.

It also doesn't help that he's on the cover of the January Issue of Golf Digest with President Obama - "10 things Obama could learn from Tiger -- and vice versa." Let's see if that hits the newsstands.

Side notes...

The other Thunder Cat (mistress) from Las Vegs sold her soul (story) to the devil (media/tabloids) for a rumored $100,000...I'm thinking she could have at least have gotten a half a million out of the deal.

Question, does Tiger bounce back like Kobe or does he disappear faster than Steve Harvey afro (edge it up)?

I'm hoping he bounces back...shout out to Juvenile!

And big ups to Philly's favorite Daughter, Allen Iverson is headed back to Philly.  I just hope he stays the entire season and they at least make the playoffs.

"He Didn't Have to do it...But He Did"

NBA great Shaquille O'Neal pays for Shaniya's funeral

The death of 5 year old Shaniya Davis received national attention a few weeks ago.  The gruesome circumstances surrounding her death has not only left the Fayetteville, NC community in shocked and disbelief, but it also left one NBA great, like many others, in tears.

"I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye," Shaq, as he is commonly known, told The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

He first asked to get in touch with the Lockhart family on Nov. 18, the day after the State Medical Examiner's office confirmed that a child's body found in Lee County on Nov. 16 was in fact Shaniya's.

You know this story has flew under the radar for a week and some change now and I'm sure Shaq would prefer for it to be this way.  He didn't have to do it, but he did and that alone deserves high praise.  Bless his heart!

Two For One...Bow Down/Tiger Tiger Woods Yall!‏

"Bow Down"

To be perfectly honest! I don't feel sorry for Bobby Bowden. For 25 years, he was one of the best coaches in college football. For the past 5, he's been one of the best cheerleaders. You're 80 and your wife is still alive. Go be with her and your 20 plus grandchildren. I promise that FSU will have something named in your honor and they will never forget you. Neither will college football for that matter.

"Tiger Tiger Woods Yall"

As one article put it, Tiger would love to use a mulligan right about now. Let's call it for what it is. Curiosity kills the cat and by Tiger trying to avoid the obvious, it's only going to make it worse. For those who haven't been following the story, click here!

I have a few theories of my own...

1). It's true, Tiger was playing Thunder Cat with ole girl from the tabloids and his wife got fed up. After his wife hit hm a few times, he thought about Chris Brown and wanted to drive away from the situation.

2.) TP: Why did he leave his house so late? ME: Maybe he was going to get ice cream (w/o the swirl)!

3.) Word on the street is Tiger don't drink like that, but maybe he did that night, and before he left the house, ole girl had already busted out the windows and his lip and face. Therefore he decided to try his luck and bolt for Cali for his golf tournament a few days early...

Other theories?

"Bayou Brees"

Respect Earned Now.  We Believe!  Two of the many signs displayed by Saints' fans during the Monday Night Football game between the Patriots and the Saints.  With every win this teams brings the parrishes, cities, and the state much closer after hurricaine katrina and chaos that continues to occur in its aftermath nearly wiped out it's historic culture and traditions 5 years ago.

It may be too early to believe the hype, but Drew Brees showed tonight that if he don't turn the ball over, the Saints will be tough to beat down the stretch.

I can only imagine the atmosphere on Bourbon Street right about now.  Who dat...who dey!

"You Jive Turkey" - College Football Picks of the Week

Happy Thanksgiving!  You can sort of compare the Notre Dame footall season to my fantasy football season...loosing and loosing fast after an excellent start!  Unlike the Irish though, I'm falling but still fighting.  Apparently Jimmy Clausen, who's sporting a fresh black eye, got "coldclocked" leaving a bar near downtown South Bend in the early Sunday morning hours after loosing to UCONN.  Read here.

SMH at the "Jive Turkey" who sucker punched him.  Fight like a real man.  This lead us to rivalry weekend in College Football.

Last Week 3-2
Overall 33-27

It's the Bayou Classic (Arguably one of the best historically black college football rivalry games)
Grambling State vs. Southern University
It's going to be a party down on the bayou.  Prarie View is the best team in the SWAC west but these two teams are playing for more than just 2nd place.  They are competing for the best band, who's going to bring out the best musical guest during the halftime show and Louisiana bragging rights until next Thanksgiving...SU 35-31

No. 24 North Carolina at North Carolina State
The defense is at it again.  We (UNC) have no choice but to revenge that loss to the Wolfwack we suffered last year.  As someone tweeted over the weekend, "how come when we need a score, I'd much rather our defense be on the field."  He said it, not me!  If the O compliments the D, Gator, Champs, or maybe even Chik Fil A bowl here we come...31-27

No. 2 Alabama at Auburn
My upset pick of the week.  Alabama and Florida took last week off with those cup cake wins.  Auburn played well enough to beat UGA last week although they didn't.  This week they play well and win.  Look for Auburn's rushing attack to out play Ingram... Auburn 28-24

No. 25 Mississippi at Mississippi State
No let down here.  Ole Miss is still riding high off of LSU's clock issues on last week.  The score really shouldn't have been that close, in the rebels favor.  Snead and company have rebounded well from the early season swine flu that knocked out just about half the team...Ole Miss 24-16

No. 17 Miami (FL) at South Florida
Miami almost lost to an improved Duke team last week before turning it in over the last quarter and a half.  This time they won't be as lucky on the road against South Florida.  Ok, so I was wrong, Jacory Harris has a long way to go if he wants to be a top quarterback in college football.  Look for SF to feast off Jacory's generosity (INT's)...SF 42-21

"I'm a Flirt"

Man Winds Up "Ex-Posed" Nude On Facebook
An Omaha, Neb. man said romance turned to revenge when he was victimized by his girlfriend and then exposed on Facebook.

He said that he didn't realize his 21-year-old girlfriend had caught him flirting with another woman on Facebook.

He said he also didn't know that she had his Facebook password until he had agreed to be handcuffed to his bed and photographed.

Click the title for the article.  Click here for video on the story.

Now you know if a male does this to a female, he's going to jail, no questions asked. Just be careful in the Facebook world. Everyone don't use it for the same reason.  Another Story. And Another.

"All Betts Off" - Marginalized Males Part II

An inspiring story of a young man who was at the top of his class but let one mistake cost him almost 9 years of his life.  However unlike many who are confined to the walls of a prison cell, R.Dwayne Betts transformed his life from former ex-con to husband, father, college educated, and author.  In his his memoir, "A Question of Freedom," he talks about wanting to connect with the community that he comes from and how he beat the odds after incarceration.
The video story begins at the 1:20 mark.

"It's Just Getting Started" - College Football Games of the Week

This is not a good time to be married to someone who loves to watch sports all day...everyday!  The College Football Season is almost over.  College basketball and the NBA are just tipping off and the NFL is starting to heat up.  What an exciting time to be a die hard sports fan.

What's not exciting, the college football schedule this weekend and the fact that Florida and Alabama are playing teams we only hear of during college basketball conference tournaments in March.  Here are my picks...

Last Week 4-1

Overall 30-25 (watch out, I'm 8-2 in the last two weeks)

North Carolina at Boston College
One of the best defenses in the country, without a doubt.  I'm still waiting on Yates to have a breakout game, if he does, ChikFil-A bowl here we come.  The defense will be challenged though, BC is offensive minded.  But we hot right now...UNC 23-21

No. 8 LSU at Mississippi
A lot of folks who get paid to big money to analyze games think this is the game that LSU tanks.  If they paid me to make such picks, I would "almost" have to agree.  But since they don't, the bayou boy in me and fan says...NAW!  LSU wakes up after being tested by La Tech...  Tigers 31-24

No. 25 California at No. 17 Stanford
Stanford dominated one of the best college football programs of this decade last week.  Trust, it won't stop here.  Standford  40-28

No. 14 Penn State at Michigan State
This is my upset game of the week.  MSU could easily be 8-3 this year in a tough conference.  Win this game and they assure themselves of a bowl game.  Win big and it might be a decent one.  PSU is overrated after a strong start.  MSU 31-27

HBCU Game of the Week
Mississippi Valley State vs. Alabama A&M
Patiently waiting on the bayou classic game next Thursday(Thanksgiving), which will mark my last picks for the HBCU games of the week...A&M by alot 35-7

"On Track for Greatness"

He won't make it because of his jumpshot. He definitely won't make it because of his handles. He probably won't make it because of his passing or his defense either. And all CNN gives you is instant credibility, and sometimes that's not always what it's hyped up to be.

The pressure! The sacrifice! At nine years Dakota Simms has so much ahead him that not even his amazing basketball talents won't be the final factor that determines how far he succeeds in life and in basketball.

Ultimately it will be mom, dad, grandparents, and or guardian. It will be the life lessons taught at home and in the classroom that will continue to allow young Dakota to keep playing and keep maturing both on and off the basketball court. It all starts at home with self-discipline, self-respect, self determination.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." -Proberbs 22-6.

Keep it up young man and maybe one day you will be able to blaze your own path to greatness.

Race, Education, and Hunger

A study conducted at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis finds that 49 percent of all American children will at some time in their childhood be in a family that qualifies for food stamps. The study, published in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, also found a huge racial disparity. According to the data, 90 percent of African-American children will at some time in their childhood be in a family that qualifies for food stamps. For whites, the figure is 37 percent.

The study found that black children in a single-parent family, whose head has less than a high school education, have a 97 percent chance of being in a food stamp family by age 10.

Interesting enough, growing up as a kid I was embarrassed a few times when my mom sent me to the store with the paper food stamps although I never admitted it to her until yesterday.  She wasn't upset at all but she quickly pointed out that "not one of my kids ever went hungry."  The older my siblings and I get, the more she share some of her old school tactics from back in the day when she use to sell some of them stamps in order pay the light bill.  And that is Life...!  It has nothing to do with race or education.  It has everything to do with the quality of life!

Those numbers are scary because I can't imagine them decreasing in the current economy we live in.

"WHY?" - College Football Games of the Week

There are so many different things wrong with this situation: Pellet Gun, black hoodies with Tennessee on them, you are around the corner from campus, drugs, freshman, and black males.

Personally this story hits home for me because of one of the individuals involved, but yet the truth of the matter is some things are just not worth it. Click here or the title for full story.

I traded emails today with a friend and former colleague who expressed that these are young people, young men at that, who made a mistake. Although the email conversation never got to the point of either one of us giving our thoughts are whether or not the young men should be able to return to football at the Univ. of Tennessee, we did talk around this idea of whether the university and or football program should receive the negative press and shameful stereotypes that will ensue over the next few days, weeks, and months. Should these young men be held accountable? YES! Should they be kicked off the football team? YES! Should they be stripped of an education, the emotional support, and the right to make amendments for what they did? NO, but they will be there is no one to blame but themselves.

Last Week 4-1
Overall 26-24

No. 14 Miami (FL) at North Carolina
YES!  Another top 25 team we can add to our resume when it comes to getting a decent bowl game nod.  Miami has cooled off a little, although still tough.  We will need our top 25 defense to keep us in the game until the offense find a groove.  Things should be interesting with Houston carrying the load...Heels 23-16

No. 16 Utah at No. 4 TCU
If I didn't know any better, I'd say LT was playing running back for TCU and the year was 1999-2000.  At this point, it's real simple, they win out and they get a BCS bowl bid.  They are good because they score, early and often...TCU 45-31

No. 10 Iowa at No. 11 Ohio State
Penn State let me down last week while OSU keeps trying to turn me into a believer.  SIKE, that will never happen (shout out to Eddie Kane).  However, they are getting better and how come nobody can tackly Pryor, he reminds me of an unpolished Randall Cunningham.  Iowa's out of the BCS, maybe even a conference title shot...OSU 27-20

Notre Dame at No. 12 Pittsburgh
Pitt hasn't played anyone all year.  They have one loss and that's to NC State.  However, if they can pull off a win here, Charlie's coaching internship at Notre Dame could be over.  I'm a little uneasy over this one, ND is mad so they will come ready to play. (crossing my fingers)...Pitt 31-28

HBCU Game of the Week
North Carolina Central at  Winston Salem State
I'm a little upset at myself, Bowie State (what up G-Money) played Fay State in the CIAA championship game last week and I didn't even feature it on my blog.  These two teams left the CIAA for greener pastures...but that also means less W's in the win-loss column.  (SMH)...WS 28-24

"Win at all Cost"

NAW!  I'll take an L if it means keeping my job.  Again, another example in my opinion where society is placing greater emphasis on things like high school athletics versus education.  Click the title for full article.

Coaches Toby Belt and Quirino Silva -- both assistants -- were suspended without pay last week. They are accused of tampering with evidence that may have implicated a varsity football player.

The incident started when Dena Sandoval started asking questions about injuries her son suffered during a fight at school. He claims a football player stabbed him and a district police officer beat him up.

Both Sandoval and the district were hoping surveillance video would shed some light on the situation, but when district police went to retrieve it, the tape was gone.

According to CISD's superintendent, Belt and Silva were let into the locked room where the school's surveillance videos are kept by the principals' secretary, Maxine Zeringue. She's been fired over the situation.

"Who let the Katt Out the Bag"

What in the heck is wrong with this guy?  First, he alledgedly holds a 17 year old boy hostage and now they say he's stealing jewlery

I don't know, listen to the 911 call by clicking here and you be the judge.  Sound like somebody got tired of playing hide and go get it (GROSS).

This should be a lesson to all the kids in the world.  Say no to DRUGS!  I'm thinking this guy may really need some help.

What do you think was really going on in that house?

...See it Through!

"Marginalized Males of Color" - Part I

A sense of urgency: Marginalized males of color

Historically marginalized males of color remain underrepresented in higher education. These disparities affect an entire generation of young men and prevent the nation from tapping a potential pool of talent needed to compete globally and improve the economy at home. Higher Education Success Among Historically Marginalized Males, by Loren Harris, examines the core issues responsible for higher education attainment gaps among this group. Also, hear what Harris says about Lumina's big goal and listen to this podcast.

It's no secret that across the various colleges and universities, woman are being admitted, enrolling, and graduating at higher rates than males. When it comes specifically to black males, the numbers don't compare. We've discussed before who should be blamed (parents). There has also been talk about where these young people end up (dead, jail, homeless). What about the why?

Here is some insight that discusses the "Why" in my opinion. The Lumina Foundation for Education, an Indianapolis-based, private, independent foundation, strives to help people achieve their potential by expanding access to and success in education beyond high school.

Stereotype Threat Theory evolved by Claude Steele, this hypothesis posits that underachieving African American students downplay the importance of academic achievement because they fear fulfilling negative group stereotypes about being intellectually inferior. Steele advances the notion that Black students disengage from academic settings rather than face the prospects of failing and confirming stereotypes about intellectual inferiority or laziness. Tested in both controlled settings and everyday contexts, the stereotype threat hypothesis seems to hold true.

The stereotype threat theory is one of a few theories offered in the article. After thinking about Steele's hypothesis, I will have to agree to some extent. Young people, especially males who are not confident in their own abilities rarely take risk in an academic setting. They'd much rather not try at all and simply give up thus confirming Steele's beliefs.

However I'm convinced that the more risk you take academically, the better your chances of learning. Ultimately, one has to want to learn and excel academically. We have to re-emphasize academic achievement and decentralize America’s stereotypes and culture which learning takes a back seat to (video games, cell phones, television, etc).

"Gimme Twenty Dollars"

The NFL should really be called the No Fun League.  I have to give it to Chad Johnson, T.O (when he didn't play for Buffalo), and others mad props for making the game entertaining.  Roger Goddell need to stay off them steroids and relax.  Chad OchoCinco, although he shouldn't, probably will be fined a large amount of money for trying to give that official a dollar.  "Probably should have gave him twenty..."

"HOMECOMING" - College Football Games of the Week

The activities and the people.  The fellowship with friends and former classmates.  Family (shout out to my pops).  The food.  The football game.  The parties.  The drive, ride, or flight back home on Sunday...the memories.

At the end of the day it's about the experience, your experience.  It's almost like life itself, you get what you put into it.

Nobody comes back or particpates in this celebration to hear 10 different people ask...so what are you doing these days, or at least not in the middle of the party or at the bar.  How about this, catch them at the cookout or on the yard and then you can ask all the questions you want.

If you are anything like me, you're walking around to your own theme song (play below) and doing a HOP in your head hoping your song come on so you can "set it owt."  And if it doesn't that's cool.  You know why?  Because it's HOMECOMING!

"Did you realize that you are a champion in their EYES?"

"YES I DID..."

Last week 2-3
Overall    22-23

Puke vs UNC
Let's be honest, Puke is no pushover and they have more wins in the ACC than UNC.  But I don't believe the hype, at least not yet.  It's HOMECOMING in Chapel Hill therefore I expect Yates and others to have their stuff together...UNC 31-30

No. 9 LSU at No. 3 Alabama
This will mark the second straight week I go against one of my two favorite teams.  Unlike last week, I think I will get this one right. Jefferson will be a good quarterback for LSU one day, but right now he's too inconsistent.  Alabama is playing at home and in the SEC, that's a legitmate advantage...Tide 34-28

No. 16 Ohio State at No. 11 Penn State
Pryor will make OSU fans cringe once more.  PSU got a decent quarterback of their own.  PSU is more of a complete team then OSU on all sides of the ball.  If Pryor makes mistakes early, PSU will rout OSU...PSU 42-31

Florida State at Clemson
FSU will be looking for more than a defensive coordinator after this season.  Too bad Bobby Bowden thinks he's going to be the one to hire that person.  It's time to hang it up.  Clemson runs all over FSU but unilke UNC, they seal the deal at home...Tigers 27-17

HBCU Game of the Week
North Carolina A&T at Florida A&M
A&T still might be feeling the affects from their HOMECOMING weekend celebration last week.  Even if they weren't, it wouldn't matter.  They are no match for A&M's band nor football team...A&M 30-14

"Welcome Back - NBA"

I was actually looking forward to the NBA season this year until I heard about Glenn "Big Baby Dummy" Davis punching his best friend, breaking his thumb in the process. Now he will likely miss half the season with injury and suspension (DUMMY). Who fights when you make that much money? I know it's early but I got a few NBA predictions...

MVP: The usual suspects will contend, but Bron Bron will win (shout out to Fallis). Check out his numbers from 1st game although Boston was the better team last night
Sleeper: Brandon Roy

ROY: Tyreke Evans had a nice preseason (so did Ty Lawson), look for Evans (he's starting) to win since Griffin is injured and will get off to a late start.
Sleeper: Dejuan Blair (Spurs)

Comeback Player: Gilbert Arenas
Sleeper: Sean May (had a good camp in Sac Town)

Coach: Phil Daddy, Lakers will have best record in NBA
Sleeper: Larry Brown, just make the playoffs and you win me over as a Bobcats fan, i promise.

6th Man: Rasheed Wallace (tar heel)
Sleeper: Paul Milsap, he got a lot of money to stay in Utah

DefPOY: (TIE)Dwight Howard and Bron Bron
Sleeper: Chris Paul

CHAMPS: Lakers! The east teams (Magic, Cavs, Celtics) will have beat each other up and by the time they reach the finals, it won't matter which team the Lakers play.

"Forever Young" - College Football Games of the Week

How fitting that on the eve of Texas playing a big game this weekend against OK-State that Vince Young will get his first start in a long time.  All I have to say is "save your career young man...save your career."  But then again, he can't be any worse than 47 year old Kerry Collins.

Last Week 1-4

Overall 20-20

North Carolina at No. 13 Virginia Tech
If UNC can win, it will make the game against Duke next week that more exciting.  Then again, it's homecoming so it probably won't matter.  I've been picking my boys all year, but after the FSU game last week, it seems as though the offense has lost its confidence.  Va Tech is at home, plus their defense may equal trouble for a sputtering UNC offense...Pokies 20-10

No. 3 Texas at No. 14 Oklahoma State
This is my upset pick of the week.  Even without Bryant (the NCAA did him wrong), Ok State will play well.  Texas struggled two weeks ago on a neutral site against OU.  They wont be so lucky in Stillwater (shout out to Dey-Dey)...OKST 30-17

No. 5 USC at No. 10 Oregon
I've been doubting USC all year, mainly because of the upset factor.  They might be a legitmate top 5 team.  I expect this to be a ball game.  If Joe McKnight, the second coming of Reggie Bush (w/o the fumbles), gets off, USC will roll...USC 28-24

No. 22 South Carolina at Tennessee
The Vols played well enough to win last week, they also played bad enough on special teams last week to loose, which they did.  But Lane and his Daddy (Monte) got the Vols playing well.  Get Crompton out of the pocket like the UGA game, and the Vols can get their second big win of the season...Vols 31-17

Black College Football Game of the Week
Central State vs. North Carolina Central
These two teams have a lot in common.  They both have the word Central in their school name, they are both 1-6, and they are both AWFUL in football.  But it's homecoming at NCCU... and I'm going...Eagles 21-14

"Mo' Money...Mo' Problems"

Biggie said it best, but I'm willing to argue that with "NO money, comes Mo' Problems", just ask Michael Vick!

In 12 years, Antoine Walker made more than $110 million playing professional basketball moderately well. Take away taxes, throw in some adidas endorsement money and a "NBA Live 99" cover, and he's left with, what, $60-to-65 million?

Whatever the details, it was a big chunk of change, which, amazingly, wasn't enough.

Living at the Bishops Forest condominium complex in Waltham during the Celtics season, Walker turned the pavement surrounding his home into a virtual luxury car lot — two Bentleys, two Mercedes, a Range Rover, a Cadillac Escalade, a bright red Hummer. Often, the vehicles were tricked out with custom paint jobs, rims, and sound systems at considerable added expense. He also collected top-line watches — Rolexes and diamond-encrusted Cartiers."

Who feels sorry for Mr. Walker?  "Not I said the dog..."

"No Ceilings"

I'm convinced that today’s hip hop music should only be for the listening ears of those folks who can differentiate between right and wrong. The lyrics of hip hop artists are not what our young people should be raised on. I encourage parents and future parents to be role models. Take the time to teach life lessons and not allow the media to raise our young people. With that being said…

For the Hip Hop Heads (shout out to Royce)...

I don't know hip hop fans, if I was Lil Wayne, I would be "proud" of myself too (from a lyrical standpoint, not from having all them kids...that's not cool) after listening to his version of "Run this Town."

He also rips "wasted" and "swag surfin." Give a listen below and by clicking the title. (Parental Advisory).

Somebody let me know where I can get the "No Ceilings" mixtape...

Lil Wayne - Run This Town | Audio | Rap Basement

"Bad Boy(s) For Life"

Jadakiss recently revealed how close The LOX actually are to signing a deal with Diddy, actually saying that the rap-mogul has already overed the group a one-album deal. "Our main focus right now is that Lox album," Jada stressed in an interview. "It might be coming out through Diddy, it might be coming out through some other people, but it's going down. Yeah, Diddy just did a new deal with Interscope as y'all know with his Dirty Money and all his other stuff, he put an offer out there for a one album deal over there, so you know, we thinking about making it. If it don't make dollars, it could make cents and we'll do it again."

I'm a little indifferent about this decision.  The LOX on Bad Boy made beautiful music back in the day.  However these days, unless you a R&B boy band (Day 26), Diddy is bound to screw up your career (Danity Kane, Shyne).

Check out a flashback joint from the "Money, Power, Respect" album.

"Her Heart"

When Charles Tillman was asked to speak to some members of the United States Congress about the Berlin Heart, the Bears cornerback didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation. A year ago, the revolutionary device kept his infant daughter, Tiana, alive while she awaited a heart transplant that saved her life.

Tillman traveled today to Washington, where he’ll speak at a luncheon in a congressional meeting room at the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center. The event will highlight medical technologies that are helping to lower health care costs and improve the quality of life for patients with cardiovascular disease.

For more on the Berlin Heart, click here.

This is a great story!  It doesn't even matter that you loss by 30 points to the Bengals or that you got beat for two touchdowns by Chad Ochocino.  In fact, it shouldn't matter at all when it comes to life.

"Gotta be the Shoes"

We all knew that Michael Jordan was a tad bit cocky and arrogant...but he backed it up on the basketball court. His youngest son Marcus hasn't even come close to his father's basketball skills, yet he is refusing to wear shoes made by adidas, the brand the University of Central Florida has a contract with for all its sports. He says he will only wear his father's Nike Air Jordan shoes because it holds special meaning to his family.

A fight over the shoes Michael Jordan's son will wear at the University of Central Florida could cost the school financially, 3 million dollars, maybe more.

If it was me, until Michael Jordan becomes a UCF booster and donates about 10 million to UCF athletic department, that joker will be wearing All Day I Dream About School (ADIDAS) or I would release him from his scholy. There is no I in team, but there is one in WIN as MJ said. But the last time I checked, Marcus hasn’t won any big games!

"I'm not Sure What's Worst..."

...the Titans loosing 59-0 to the Patriots or Jeff Fisher (Titans coach) rocking a Colts Jersey to a charity event.

To make matters even worst, Fisher says "I just wanted to feel like a winner."  For those who don't follow football, the Titans have not won a game all year.

"Eff his life!"  LMBO!

"My President's..." - College Football Games of the Week

...COOL." No, not Barack, I mean, he's cool too but so is Ga Tech's President Bud Peterson. Before he came to his senses with his plans to severely punish the group that led the goalpost charge to his home, he was making a speech like the one in the video. Although very cautious with his words, I appreciate the fact that he would have invited them inside his house if it wasn't so many of them (yeah right).

This story almost seems like Déjà Vu. The last time a goal post was torn down at UNC was when we beat Florida State back in 2003 (shout out to Dre Wesson who led that charge).

Last Week 3-2
Overall 19-16

This Week
Florida State at North Carolina
Goal Posts?  Well, FSU will be a tough play although their record says otherwise. We are making history by hosting our very first Thursday night football game (Thanks Roy, just my opinion).  This our chance to stick it to them and pay them back for when Greg Jones ran over Dexter Reid (click here) a few years back.  If Yates has a good game, we win!  Plain and Simple...UNC 31-24

Tennessee at No. 2 Alabama
UT had a great win against UGA two weeks ago.  Now back to reality.  Crompton is ok, but not good.  Unless safety Eric Berry plays QB, RB, WR, DB, and safety, the Vols will not be able to keep up with Alabama.  UA 35-21

No. 13 Penn State at Michigan
Michigan's quarterback Forcier will win a Heisman if he stays healthy and stays in school for at least 3 years.  I think he's that good, maybe even better than Pryor from OSU (sorry eddie).  Penn State is good, but being on the road in Ann Arbor will pose some issues... UM 27-20

No. 8 TCU at No. 16 Brigham Young
BYU just may be back after getting smacked by FSU early in the season.  They are averaging almost 45 points a game in their last four games.  The only issue is TCU is putting up just as many points. The first team to get a stop in the 4th quarter wins... BYU 42-38

HBCU Game of the Week (ESPNU Thurs night)
Prairie View vs. Southern University
"Without the band, it's just a game" was my high school band slogan.  Apparently Prairie View and Grambling State bands felt the same way after continuing to play after the offense broke the huddle during last week's game...so they got FINED.  This is actually going to be a good game between two of your better teams in the SWAC.  I'm going with my home state over the purple and gold, SU puts up points, lots of them...SU 42-24

"Chopped and Screwed"

Exclusive: NeNe Leakes Says 'Housewives' Producers Wrongly Portray Her

NeNe Leakes quickly became the breakout star of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" and has enjoyed the rewards of her overnight stardom. However, the tell-it-like-it-is diva recently experienced what she deems a harsh reality bite on her character. NeNe reached out to ESSENCE.com to get a few things off her chest about the business of dramality TV.
To read more, click here.
Why should society feel sorry for individuals (reality tv stars) who portray their life in front of a camera?  This ain't football, you can't get a do over.  Producers and companies pay you a decent amount of money to "chop and screw" (RIP DJ Screw) up your life any way they want to and then put it out there for the world to see.

Suck it up and move on.  Besides, just my personal opinion, I'm not saying I watch the show or anything, but NeNe is the fire starter, which is why Bravo will keep her on there.

"College...Spread the Word"

When you were applying to college, did you have some of the same fears or did you already know you were going to college, just didn't know where?

For me, I knew I was going to college and I had my favorite list of schools, it was just a matter of where.  The hardest thing for me from the list above was sitting down trying to find scholarships.  Seem like I applied for about 30, only got 2 or 3 for just the first year only.

"The Locals"

Jasper Howard, a 20-year-old cornerback from Miami, Florida, was stabbed to death early Sunday after a student dance on the campus in Storrs, authorities said. He was a star football player for UConn and a soon to be dad.

After thinking about this for a few days, I don't understand why no one didnt step up immediatedly, especially when all of these people are standing around. A coach should never have to go identify the body of one of his players. I can't imagine that phone call he had to make to his mother.

Therefore my questions is: Why do "locals" hang out near on campus college environments? If college is not for you or wasn't (drop out) for you, then there is no reason for you to be near a campus without a specific reason or purpose in my opinion, especially for an on campus party.

"Grow Up...ya Nasty"

I know, it has nothing to do with spots, music, or education...but it has everything to do with life!

Shout out to NS for this one...

"Road Trip" - College Football Picks of the Week

Seeing friends and former colleagues...A blessing

Crashing on two air mattresses and a GREEN couch...Thank you (Andrea)

Watching about 60 people trip over the steps in section A of Neyland and UT spank UGA...Smiles (shout out to the lil kid who sat behind us)

Old City...Memories

Three guys (shout out to Mark and Jeff) and an overweight dog (Coach), just like old times...Priceless!
Last Week 2-3

Overall 16-14

This Week

No. 8 Cincinnati at No. 21 South Florida
Cincinnati will get knocked back to normal in this game.  The bearcats starting QB was told in the spring by coaches to act like he wanted to be here and he's proved that since then.  But any BCS hopes goes out the windown with a loss to SF...SF 42-30

No. 6 USC at No. 25 Notre Dame
I really do believe Notre Dame is back.  I expect USC's freshman quarterback to falter in a hostile environment.  The ND faithful has been waiting for a few years to field a decent team against USC this will be their best chance.  Clausen becomes a superstar in this game... ND 38-30

No. 4 Virginia Tech at No. 19 Georgia Tech
The battle for supremacy in the ACC is on the line.  The way Ga Tech is running the ball, I don't see any team in the ACC stoping them, especially the way they rolled over FSU last week.  I expect this to be a better game than the USC game and a close one.  Ga Tech 24-23

No. 20 Oklahoma vs. No. 3 Texas
Sam Bradford should make his return against Texas but I wouldnt expect much.  Colt McCoy is leading the Heisman race in my opinion.  I expect them to make a statement in this game vs. OU...Texas 28-17

HBCU Game of the Week
Fayetteville State vs. Johnson C. Smith
It's homecoming in Charlotte so expect JCSU crowd to be rocking from the band and other festivities, but don't count on the football team to join in on the party... FSU 31-17
