The Huge Gender Gap in African-American Graduate School Enrollments

Black women are making most of the gains as it relates to Graduate School enrollments. In the fall of 2008, there were 121,113 black women enrolled in graduate school compared to 45,738 black men.

Thus, black women accounted for a whopping 72.6 percent of all African-American graduate school enrollments. In contrast, women make up 60.9 percent of white graduate school enrollments.

What's most important is that we pay attention to both of those numbers combined. The opportunities are there, you must have the motivation and will to take advantage of them. Regardless of how well you performed in undergrad, like standardize tests, your college GPA it's not an indicator of how well one performs at the next level. It does mean however you will have to try a little harder than others to get to where you want to be.

  1. Well, first of all, most of our black men are incarcerated. A lot of the ones that aren't idolize rappers (and the ignorant ones I might add), thugs, etc... It starts at home! There are few black fathers that are real fathers. The lack of the father in the household causes this lack of motivation to be educated the right way. Instead, men go to the streets to be educated, and that kind of education puts them in prison.

Because of this, black women have to put themselves in a position to take care of themselves and their families. So, they get educated! This education leads to opportunities for them to provide for their families without needing a man around to be the provider.

Let me make one more point. As black men, when we are in college, we focus on the social side of college and sleeping with as many girls as we can. While doing this, we lose our focus!

Women on the other hand can be the biggest FREAKS in the world, but they still somehow graduate with 4.0 GPAs and end up in somebody's graduate school.

As a whole, women just handle business better than men. I can openly and honestly say that without hesitating because I truly believe that.

  2. in the AA community young women are raised to be "focused", "get an education girl", "don't depend on a man for anything".....however, boys are raised to be strong, fast, popular. huge disparity!
